Character Analysis: The Gingerbread Man
There are times in Kindergarten, as in life, when you just gotta get the facts straight, especially if it involves cookies and stories – you know, the good stuff. Teacher Claire Brown knows this, and so did her eager students when they put one of childhood’s legendary miscreants, The Gingerbread Man, under the microscope. And although everyone involved now understands this Cookie’s colorful character better than before, alas we are still no closer to answering the question that has long puzzled experts on the subject: Why did The Gingerbread Man really run away?
Animal Popplets
Kindergarten students love animals, and learning all the amazing facts about animals helps Kindergarteners to understand and appreciate the world we share – it’s also a lot of fun. Take a look at this Giraffe popplet, part of an activity from Technology In Early Childhood:
With a few images and a few facts, Kindergarteners can produce the most amazing animal infographics. It can be plants, insects, rivers…spiders! – spiders are very popular with Kindergarteners.
Making Ice Cream
Doing stuff on Popplet is always a lot of fun, but making ice cream, and making a popplet about making ice cream is about as fun as it gets: just ask Miss Bailey’s very lucky students. Or better still, check out their happy smiling faces in the popplets they made to document their culinary prowess – priceless!
Letter Popplets: A , B , C…
A Popplet favorite: Give the students a letter, then off they go searching for objects in the classroom or corridoors that begin with that letter, finally producing a Popplet that documents their findings. The little Cougars at Clarksville Academy went in quest of all things beginning with “P” in this activity with QR Codes and made their teacher shared these popplets:
This activity can be adapted for any letter and students can write, draw and even use their iPads to photograph the objects they discover, and add these images to their popplet boards, like in Staci Robinson’s splendid video demonstrating how students made Letter Popplets in her classroom:
Opposite Pairs
The development of reading and writing skills is a primary goal in Kindergarten, and we see this reflected in the very large number of wonderfully educational literacy Popplets that are shared daily on Popplet’s social media pages. Shapes: a Popplet Lesson Plan
Geometry learning begins in Kindergarten and Popplet is great for learning the names of shapes and the different shapes of objects. Melissa Waltz set her students the task of photographing things of a certain shape, with impressive results:
Comparing and Contrasting
Honing the valuable skills of comparing and contrasting is a lifelong process, which often begins in the Kindergarten class. Popplet let’s students produce rich graphics that demonstrate an understanding of how things are different, and how things are the same.
